This exercise required us to carefully select and organize stories based on their timeliness, relevance, and emotional resonance with viewers. My objective was to craft a well-balanced broadcast based upon news events that occurred from December 4 – December 9, 2024, combining hard news with feature stories, while thoughtfully considering the social, political, and emotional impact of each segment. This assignment challenged me to think critically about what makes a story truly newsworthy on any given day and how to structure it for a broadcast that informs, engages, and leaves a lasting impression. Reason: This is a breaking and high-profile criminal case with national attention regarding a very public, cold-blooded murder, the potential for more violence against other health insurance sector executives, the state of healthcare in the US, and the public’s lack of empathy for the victim, making it the strongest story to lead the broadcast. It immediately draws viewers into the program.

The nation has been gripped by the tragic shooting death of Brian Thompson, CEO of United Healthcare, and the nationwide manhunt for the gunman responsible for taking his life early on the morning of December 4th in midtown Manhattan. The gunman was only a few feet away from Thompson when he fatally shot him as he approached the New York Hilton Midtown to prepare for a conference being held at the hotel. The gunman reportedly waited hours for Thompson, then fled the scene on a bicycle to Central Park and then taking a taxi to a bus depot. 

As a breaking story, the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, a person of interest in the United Healthcare CEO shooting, should receive top placement in a broadcast. Timely updates about significant criminal cases resonate with viewers, especially when they involve high-profile individuals. The ongoing investigation provides fresh details for audiences who want to understand the motives, implications, and broader impact of the crime. This case has already garnered an enormous amount of public interest due to the nature of the crime—a cold-blooded, public murder of a corporate leader—and the targeting of a healthcare executive. The arrest signifies progress in a case that has kept the public and business sectors on edge, especially given fears of the possibility of further violence against healthcare executives.

The shooting of a high-ranking executive, particularly in such a high-stakes industry, also brings attention to the risks faced by public figures in polarized times like the several attempts made against Donald Trump’s life. It can open a dialogue about how the healthcare industry can balance the needs of their investors and the needs of the American public whose premiums have led to enormous profit.

Reason: The acquittal of Daniel Penny in the chokehold death of Jordan Neely on a New York City subway is a story with major implications for criminal justice, mental health awareness, and race relations in the U.S. Its inclusion in the B Block of a network news broadcast is justified by its emotional depth, societal relevance, and ability to provoke a necessary dialogue on critical issues.

It parallels the high profile cases like the 2012 killing death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, a Black teenager in Sanford, Florida, by George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old non-Black Hispanic man and the 2020 murder of George Floyd, a Black man, by Derek Chauvin, a white police in Minnesota.  Both of these cases became part of national protests and discussions about anti-Black violence in the United States. 

In this case, Daniel Penny, a 26-year-old white Marine veteran, was acquitted of criminally negligent homicide in the subway death of Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old Black man experiencing homelessness and mental illness. Penny placed Neely in a 6-minute chokehold on a New York subway after Neely was seen yelling and begging for money. Bystanders partially recorded the incident and it was clear from the footage that Neely did not physically attack anyone. According to the Associated Press, Neely’s final moments captured on video show him becoming unresponsive while restrained.

The trial centered on Penny’s decision to use deadly force and the societal questions it raises. Prosecutors argued that Penny overreacted to a perceived threat, acting with excessive force against someone who was not an imminent danger. The city medical examiner ruled Neely’s death a homicide caused by compression of the neck, but Penny’s defense disputed the finding, arguing that he was protecting himself and other passengers, and that his “courage” helped others. 

After jurors deadlocked on a more serious manslaughter charge, prosecutors agreed to dismiss it, leaving only the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide, for which Penny was acquitted.  The acquittal highlighted two continuing issues in the nation: (1) the perception of Black people as threats, even in non-violent situations; (2) the ongoing debate about whether excessive force is justified in cases involving mental health crises; (3) perceptions of white “heroism” and “good Samaritan” or vigilante justice; (4) the societal value placed on Black lives; and (5) public perception about Black victims.

Neely’s death demonstrates the many failures of mental health systems, particularly for Blacks experiencing mental health issues. Black Americans are disproportionately affected by untreated mental illness due to barriers like systemic inequities in healthcare access, economic instability, and stigma.

This case aligns with other tragic incidents where Blacks with mental health challenges faced fatal outcomes:

• Anthony Hill (2015): A Black Air Force veteran experiencing a bipolar episode was shot and killed by a white police officer in Georgia. The police officer’s conviction was overturned by the Georgia Court of Appeals earlier this year. 
• Deborah Danner (2016): A 66-year-old Black woman with schizophrenia was killed by a white NYPD police officer in her home. In 2018, the police officer in question was acquitted of murder, manslaughter, and criminally negligent homicide in the death of Danner. 

These types of cases emphasize the dangerous intersection of mental health crises, systemic racism, and societal neglect. Including Neely’s story in the broadcast provides a platform to discuss these broader issues and their implications for public policy and community safety.

As with the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case, this case has polarized the public along political and racial lines, with figures like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis hailing Penny as a “Good Samaritan” defending public safety, while Black, civil rights leaders like Rev. Al Sharpton, who delivered the eulogy at Neely’s funeral, condemned Penny’s actions as emblematic of disregard for Black lives. The public’s response to the verdict was equally divided. Protests erupted outside the courthouse, with demonstrators chanting “no justice, no peace,” highlighting the emotional resonance of the case. Reason: After 13 years of civil war, on December 8, 2024, armed rebels took the Syrian city of Damascus, forcing long-time ruler President Bashar al-Assad to flee the country. Assad and his family were granted political asylum in Russia. The A Block covers breaking news, and the B Block covers a very emotional and legally charged story, making the C Block is the perfect place for a complex international story like this.

1. Global Implications

The fall of Damascus has important global consequences, including changes to the balance of power in the Middle East, shifts in alliances, and the potential for increased Russian influence in the region. The asylum granted by Russia to Assad leads to an inference of a new chapter in Russia’s involvement in Middle Eastern politics. This is a topic that requires detailed analysis because of the implications for the United States and other countries.

Including this story in the C Block ensures that enough time is allocated to provide viewers with the necessary context behind Syria’s 13-year civil war, Assad’s brutal presidency, and the impact of foreign intervention in Syria. Russia, Iran, and the U.S. have all played significant roles in this conflict, and its resolution could trigger discussions about the Middle East strategies of each country.

This story connects directly to U.S. interests and foreign policy. The U.S. has been involved in the Syrian conflict through humanitarian aid, counter-terrorism operations against ISIS, and diplomatic efforts.
