It goes without saying that if, like me, your plan is to become a multimedia storyteller and journalist, you should take a multimedia storytelling course. As Sherlock Holmes would say, “It’s elementary my Dear Watson!” Ultimately, it is my desire and intention to pursue a career in journalism as a multimedia storyteller, documentary film-maker, street photographer, long-form magazine writer, and social critic. I plan to use all of these platforms in ways that allow me to leverage stories that support, promote, and advance the human rights and dignity of the people of the African diaspora. Essentially, I intend on becoming a “multimedia journalist” investigating, studying, and analyzing culture, media, and the sociology of race and racism and then reporting on my findings to the world using the most effective platforms at that time to promote racial justice.
In order to use storytelling for the benefit of the Black community, I need to learn how to effectively tell stories using different types of media including text, video, audio, photographs, and graphics. So, my goal for this course is to learn how to effectively tell stories online and in other forums in ways that give rise to great emotion, captures an audience’s attention, and are interactive. My goal is to learn how to incorporate video, photography, audio, animation, slideshows, interactive timelines, and social media posts, or a combination of all of these platforms, to create narrative stories that elicit strong emotions in all viewers and gives stories about Black people a longer life cycle. I feel that I am an excellent photographer; however, I need to hone my skills as a videographer. Also, I hope to learn how to make infographics and other data visually appealing. I especially hope to learn how to effectively incorporate audio in multimedia stories. The bottom line is that my goal is to learn how to use all of these tools in ways that humanize the Black community and move America to fulfilling her promise of equality for all of us.
