Washington, D.C., September 13, 2024 — Few journalists embody boldness, forthrightness, and unapologetic advocacy for Black issues quite like Roland Martin. Armed with pen, paper, and a camera, Martin has been described as a “soldier without a sword.” Many consider him one of the most influential voices for Black America. An advocate for truth, justice, and equality, he is a relentless critic of anything that smacks of anti-Black racism.
Early Beginnings and Rise to Prominence
Born in 1968 in Houston, Texas, Roland Sebastian Martin grew up in a devout Catholic family that emphasized faith, education, and personal responsibility. Martin attended Jack Yates High School’s Magnet School of Communications in Houston. Reflecting on those formative years, Martin shared, “I started my media journey at Jack Yates’ Magnet School of Communications. My entire life has been focused on media and journalism because this is the second most powerful force in the world behind the military. We speak to the hearts and minds of people everywhere, and that’s why we matter.”
After graduating, Martin attended Texas A&M University, where he earned a degree in journalism. He began his career in local newspapers, including the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Chicago Defender, one of the nation’s most storied African American publications. At the Defender, Martin followed in the footsteps of founder Robert Abbott, challenging power structures and elevating the voices of marginalized communities. Notably, he once pressed former President George W. Bush to acknowledge the inconsistencies in his anti-affirmative action stance.
Martin’s charismatic way of speaking truth to power eventually led him to broadcast journalism. In the early 2000s, he could be seen regularly on cable television on CNN, MSNBC, and TV One, and later, the Tom Joyner Morning Show, where his commentary became newsworthy, staples of households across the country. Martin became so famous that civil rights activist and icon, Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul” regularly sought his counsel.
A Champion for the Black Community
An examination of Martin’s written work and commentary paints a picture of a man who is more than a run-of-the-mill journalist, but a vocal advocate for the issues affecting all members of the Black diaspora. Martin’s career has been defined by his commitment to addressing issues that include civil rights, education, voting rights, and systemic racism. His work consistently highlights inequities while amplifying the voices of those fighting for justice.
Attorney and television pundit A. Scott Bolden praised Martin’s impact, saying, “Whether discussing Black history, systemic racism, or political hypocrisy, Martin is a fierce advocate for the Black press and a whip-smart strategist. You learn something every time you speak with him—or argue with him on his show.”
Martin has also been a vocal critic of mainstream media, calling out its lack of diversity, misrepresentation of Black stories, and paltry investment in Black-owned media. This drive to create spaces where Black voices are prioritized led him to launch Roland Martin Unfiltered in 2018, a digital show offering news and political analysis from a Black perspective.
The Black Star Network: Reclaiming the Power of the Black Press
The creation of Roland Martin Unfiltered and his Black Star Network in 2021 marked a pivotal moment in Martin’s career and the evolution of the modern Black press. Since its inception, the Black press has been an essential source for news on Black life, culture, and politics. By leveraging digital technology, Martin has redefined how news is delivered to millions of viewers each month.
Tanisha Carmichael, executive producer of Vic Jagger in the Morning on Majic 102.3, commended Martin’s innovation: “In creating Roland Martin Unfiltered, Martin committed to providing our community with a platform focusing on news, politics, and culture. He’s empowered others by creating his own lane, offering thought-provoking content, and continuing to impact the masses with a critical voice, especially in an era where misinformation flourishes unchecked.”

Roland Martin’s influence extends beyond journalism. He is a cultural commentator, political advocate, and educator, shaping the next generation of Black media professionals. As he looks toward the future, Martin remains steadfast in his mission to amplify Black voices and challenge systemic inequities. “Our community deserves a media that speaks to its experiences and aspirations,” Martin said. “The power of the Black press is not just in telling our stories but in shaping the narrative for generations to come.”
